Turner Tops the Charts

Building Design and Construction magazine has recognized Turner as having more LEED Accredited Professionals (APs) on staff than any other firm in the architectural, engineering and construction industry in the publication’s 2009 Giants 300 Survey. Turner achieved this significant milestone as a result of our commitment to Green building practices, adding 580 accredited professionals in the past year. The company now has 1,186 LEED APs working for Turner and completed $3 billion of green construction volume during 2008.

Turner was also recognized as the top contractor utilizing building information modeling (BIM) and a leading adopter of the technology. Through the company’s commitment to integrating this 3-D technology, Turner’s portfolio of projects utilizing BIM represents more than $20 billion of construction during the past five years. Turner recently secured its 100th major contract to utilize 3-D BIM to support seamless integration and collaboration across the architecture, engineering and construction building teams.

In addition, BD&C has ranked Turner as a top contractor in the following market segment categories in the publication’s 2009 survey:

Turner’s Miami Intermodel Center Project Hosts U.S. Vice President Joe Biden

Turner staff working on the Miami Intermodel Center (MIC) project in Miami, Fla. recently hosted Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz as they announced the availability of $8.4 billion from the Federal stimulus package for transportation infrastructure projects.

The Florida Department of Transportation plans to use $2.1 million in transit funds to relocate a bus terminal to become part of the $1.7 billion intermodal center, where it will make connections between all modes of transportation, including transit buses, commuter rail, intercity rail, and airport shuttles. The U.S. Department of Transportation has already committed $540 million in federally financed loans, about one-third of the total cost, for the intermodal center. The funds from the stimulus package will provide funding for projects around the country similar to the MIC.

Upon completion, the MIC will house approximately 7,000 vehicles and is the largest component of a 20-year federally-sponsored program to improve roadways and relieve traffic congestion in Miami.

Turner’s Portfolio of Green Buildings Reaches All Time High

Turner has completed more than $3 billion of green construction projects during 2008. In addition, the firm’s sustainable construction work has grown to 40% of its backlog. Turner’s green building projects are in wide array of building types, including in the education, commercial, healthcare and aviation segments.

Turner has completed 80 projects that have been LEED Certified by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An additional 130 projects are LEED Registered. These projects are employing strategies to improve a building’s performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Turner’s active green projects during 2008 include:

• Lucas County Arena, $105 million, seeking LEED- NC Certification, Toledo, Ohio
• Sacramento International Airport Terminal B, $286 million, seeking LEED-NC Certification, Sacramento, Calif.
• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Residence Hall and Student Dining and Residential Programs Buildings, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, Champaign, Ill.
• Westinghouse Electric Company Headquarters Campus, $216 million, seeking LEED-NC Certification, Cranberry, Pa.
• Haborview Medical Center, 9th and Jefferson, $130 million, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, Seattle, Wash.

• Memorial Sloan-Kettering Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, New York, N.Y.
• Yale University Health Services Center, $97 million, seeking LEED-NC Silver Certification, New Haven, Conn.

Turner expects that client interest in Green buildings to continue. In a survey of commercial real estate executives Turner found that they viewed green buildings as having lower energy, operating and lifecycle costs, higher building values, asking rents and occupancy rates.

In 2008, Engineering News-Record recognized Turner as having the most LEED Accredited Professionals on staff among construction management firms and as the largest builder of LEED Certified projects in the United States.

Turner has also taken steps to green its operations by adding more high mileage and hybrid vehicles to its fleet, diverting over 75,000 tons of waste on its jobsites in 2008 and through greening its own offices as they are renovated.
