Turner staff working on the Miami Intermodel Center (MIC) project in Miami, Fla. recently hosted Vice President Joe Biden, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, and Miami Mayor Manny Diaz as they announced the availability of $8.4 billion from the Federal stimulus package for transportation infrastructure projects.

The Florida Department of Transportation plans to use $2.1 million in transit funds to relocate a bus terminal to become part of the $1.7 billion intermodal center, where it will make connections between all modes of transportation, including transit buses, commuter rail, intercity rail, and airport shuttles. The U.S. Department of Transportation has already committed $540 million in federally financed loans, about one-third of the total cost, for the intermodal center. The funds from the stimulus package will provide funding for projects around the country similar to the MIC.

Upon completion, the MIC will house approximately 7,000 vehicles and is the largest component of a 20-year federally-sponsored program to improve roadways and relieve traffic congestion in Miami.
