“Bike There” Feature Added to Google Maps!

It’s about time! Google Maps has finally added a Bike There feature. They’ve been plugging away for awhile now on ways to get directions for cyclists that avoids hills, excessive traffic, and points you in the best directions for pedaling to your destination. After a long time of lobbying by grassroots groups (it was all the way back in 2008 that we saw the petition circulating to add the feature), we finally have a thorough set of directions for alternative transportation, rounding out the walk there and public transit features.

Google’s Official Blog states, “My team has been keeping close tabs on all the public support for biking directions that’s been steadily coming in, but we knew that when we added the feature, we wanted to do it right: we wanted to include as much bike trail data as possible, provide efficient routes, allow riders to customize their trip, make use of bike lanes, calculate rider-friendly routes that avoid big hills and customize the look of the map for cycling to encourage folks to hop on their bikes. So that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

All you need to do is hit the drop down box for selecting your transportation method and select “bike there.” The directions generated will direct you along the flattest route, will help you avoid the busiest intersections, and will show you when there are bike-only trails or when there are bike lanes available on the roads. It shows you a great layer, highlighting:

  • Dark green indicates a dedicated bike-only trail;
  • Light green indicates a dedicated bike lane along a road;
  • Dashed green indicates roads that are designated as preferred for bicycling, but without dedicated lanes

More than 12,000 miles of trails are included in biking directions and outlined on the map, covering over 150 cities across the states. And more are being added.

Just how awesome the directions are, I’m not sure yet. I’ll have to test it out. When I asked for directions that I thought would be sure to direct me along The Wiggle in San Francisco – the flattest route from one part of the city (the one where most the hipster cyclists live) to the Mission District – Google directed me along a different route. I changed the start location to essentially the beginning of the route and it still directed me along different streets. Hmmmmm. It’ll take some playing around with this one, but ultimately, it’s a fabulous start to an important new feature!!

Burlingame thinks it’s too good for an Indian taco truck

Curry Up Now: Poaching from established merchants?

In September, the Peninsula city of Burlingame got a spicy taste of taco-truck Indian food via Curry Up Now. But according to a story in the San Mateo County Times, the truck is leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of at least some of the city’s brick-and-mortar merchants, who think it has no place in Burlingame’s affluent downtown and want it gone. The Times‘ Mike Rosenberg reports that owners Akash and Rana Kapoor are complying with a police request to move the Curry Up Now truck 500 feet every 30 minutes.

“The appearance of the new Curry Up Now food truck in downtown Burlingame … has irked some restaurateurs and business leaders who pay high rents in the area,” Rosenberg writes. “City officials and police, meanwhile, have begun fielding complaints and investigating the legality and rules surrounding lunch trucks, and they may ask the owner to move to an industrial area near the Bay.”

The Kapoors argue they’re not stealing business away from anybody. Rosenberg reports that Akash Kapoor reckons some 20 to 30 percent of diners come from dozens of miles away — visitors who are likely to patronize Burlingame’s brick and mortar shops. Customers can keep up with Curry Up Now’s shifting whereabouts through tweets, some that list its GPS coordinates.

A planned meeting with city officials, business leaders, and the Kapoors might result in Curry Up Now having to move out of downtown. Read an interview with Akash Kapoor from early October on Cyrus Farivar’s California Taco Trucks blog.

Obama Promises to Get Tough On Climate Change

obamaThe maintenance of the fragile balance of the Earth’s ecosystem is one of the most important issues facing the Obama administration and the World as a whole. In fact it may be the most important of all concerns—overshadowing war and economy. At a meeting with EU leaders, President Obama is said to have committed to redoubling efforts on climate change.

U.S. President Barack Obama and European Union leaders pledged on Tuesday to redouble efforts for a deal on climate change at a summit in Copenhagen, but gave no details of how to reach that ambitious goal.

“We discussed climate change extensively and all of us agreed that it was imperative for us to redouble our efforts in the weeks between now and the Copenhagen meeting to ensure that we create a framework for progress,” Obama told reporters. (Reuters)

When environmentalists heard of the news, they rejoiced and started organizing a huge parade in Obama’s honor.

Unfortunately, the celebrations didn’t have a chance to get off the ground as some people quickly realized that the redoubling of one’s current effort of none, amounts to no increase in effort.
